Songs are something special that transport us back in time. Roadtrips are always something we look forward to because we get to listen to our favorite songs and albums. Finding new music to add to our playlists is always exciting, learning new songs and singing our favorites while traveling to new places is one of my favorite times I share with my husband.
(My husband and I on one of our many adventures.)
This must be the place by Talking Heads and the remix(home) by LCD sound system (This must be the place, by Miles Fisher) All are songs that make me happy. To me a home is a place that has no walls, it’s a feeling that you get when you are in a place, with people that you love. The deep comfort that I feel when driving back to a place that I love, the heat of the desert, deep in the old-growth mountains, reaching the calming ocean, is what makes me feel at home. Being surrounded by those who love me is something that I will never take for granted. This song also reminds me to embrace the strange and be willing to be flexible and encourage change along the way.
(Tree hugging is one of my favorite things to do out in the woods.)
My little sister and I love listing to music when we are in the car driving or spending time with each other. This is one of our favorite songs from childhood, we used to sing this as we walked to school and back home. When I hear this song it takes me back to camping as a child with my family. Bringing back memories of lake days, campfires, watching for shooting stars deep in the woods, and the joy of being a child. As an adult it still brings joy singing this song with family and friends, and often finds its way to the playlist at gatherings. Older country songs have always held a special place in my heart, and remind me to be present in the moment and cherish what is in the now, for the future is never a given and nothing is forever. So burn those logs, drink that whiskey, sing loudly even if your voice sucks, and love deeply.
(Feet warming by the bonfire next to the ocean.)
American Girl Tom Petty reminds me of my father. Some of the first CDs I took from my dad growing up were a Tom Petty and an ACDC. Tom is my dad’s favorite artist and I am glad we got to see him in concert a few times. Tom Petty was my first concert to see at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington. Whenever I hear any song by him it instantly reminds me of my father and many of my favorite times we have shared over the years, from cooking, lake days and nights, sledding down the mountain as a child, family get-togethers, and so much more. I am grateful for having him as my father for he has always encouraged me to do what brings me joy, even if it is nontraditional and or strange to others. He never told me how to be as a young girl, and still, does his best to help me grow in my own artistic way. I am grateful to have such an amazing father and am proud to be his daughter.
Glycerine by Bush reminds me of the first cd my husband made for me when he was teaching me to play the guitar and many hours of practice. I may have never mastered this song, but I do know every word to it and am grateful to my friend Zoe for always sitting with me when I practiced and never getting sick of my mistakes along the way. Whenever this song comes on I am transported back in time to my early 20,s and am reminded of how much life has changed, nothing lasts forever, and being in the moment is a powerful tool. It is important to enjoy what we have when we have it for change is inevitable the only constant.
Grand Funk Railroad Loco-Motion was the song that I walked down the aisle to at our wedding. We had a small wedding in our back yard, this is the song that was chosen for its ability to include everyone. His little baby sister can do it with ease and it's easier to learn than the ABCs. Celebrating life is one of the greatest joys a person can have, being included in others' joyous life events takes joy to a whole new level. Next time you are at an event request this song and watch the vibe change, and the hips start shaking!
(My late Grandmother Flow at our wedding.)
My Bonus Best Friend Dena sent this song to me when I was having a rough time and always gives me the feels. It has become something that now I share with others when they are having a rough time. Sharing songs with friends can be a magical thing, programming them into our hearts and minds for the ones we love. Going through life events together happy, sad, good, bad, and having a song with the soundtrack of our lives is a way to help enrich the short time we have on this earth. I am grateful for having friends who love all kinds of music with a wide range of music from classical to techno. To be able to have good friends I feel one must be a good friend, to begin with. Surround yourself with those who lift others up rather than bringing people down. Some things in life are priceless and true friendship is rare, it should be treasured and tended with love as one would a garden of love. Life is short, I recommend dancing in the rain every chance you get!
